Nelson To Lead UNO Golf Teams

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha athletic department announced today that Tim Nelson, the current head coach of UNO's women's golf team, has been named the Director of Golf and will serve as the head coach of the new men's team in addition to his duties as women's head coach.
“Tim has done an outstanding job building our women's team into one of the best Division II teams in the Midwest,” said Mike Kemp, Associate Athletic Director who oversees golf. “As we begin our transition to Division I, we have every confidence that Tim will do the same for our new men's program while continuing to guide the women's team to the next level.”
UNO will become a member of The Summit League in July of this year and begin playing a conference schedule in the fall of 2012.
“I'm looking forward to this great challenge of moving to Division I and bringing our men's team up to the quality of our women's team,” said Nelson. “I think there are many talented men's players in Omaha, and we could field a very good team this fall.
“The players who have already shown interest in joining our program are both quality students and quality people.”
Nelson came to UNO in 2003 and proceeded to guide the Mavericks to the North Central Conference championship that season. His teams also won an NCC title in 2006-07 and won three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles from 2008-11, UNO's only three years in the league. He earned coach of the year honors twice in both the NCC (2004, 2006) and the MIAA (2009, 2010).
In addition, Nelson led the Mavericks as a team to seven NCAA regionals, winning in 2005, 2006 and 2008. UNO finished seventh at the NCAA national tournament in each of those three years.
A native of Omaha, Nelson is a 1980 graduate of UNO and has been a PGA teaching professional since 1972.
UNO is now in the process of hiring a part-time assistant golf coach.
