Minssen Gets School Records, Two Wins at MIAA Cham

EMPORIA, Kan. - Senior Heather Minssen set school records in the shot put and discus on her way to winning both events on day one of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association outdoor track and field championship. The Mavericks sit in second place after the first day of competition at Emporia State.
Day two begins on Sunday at noon. The Mavericks have 39 points and trail Central Missouri by 15 points.
Minssen became the first 50-foot shot putter in UNO history on her second throw of the day. She threw for 50-03 1/2, breaking her own school record of 49-05 set in early April. The new mark is tied for the second-best in the country in Division II this season.
Teammate Lianne McNaughton nabbed fourth place with a personal best of 45-10 1/2, beating her previous pr by almost a foot.
Minssen also broke the old school record in the discus by two feet with a toss of 160-07 on her first throw of the day. The previous mark, set by Teresa Williams, had stood since 1997. Minssen threw more than seven and a half feet farther than her personal best set last month, and the mark ranks fifth-best in the nation.
In other action, sophomore Sami Spenner set a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 19-01 1/4 which was good for fourth place and is a qualifying mark for the NCAA outdoor championship. Teammate Kathie-Lee Laidley also earned points for UNO in the event, coming in 6th with a personal best jump of 19-0, also a qualifying mark.
