EMPORIA, Kan. - Sami Spenner set a school record in the triple jump, and Madison Haugland had a personal best in the hammer throw as the UNO track and field team finished eighth at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association outdoor championship.
The Mavericks were severely shorthanded because of injuries, bringing only eight competitors to the championship at Emporia State. UNO finished with 45 points, earning six on day two. Lincoln University, the 2011 MIAA indoor champion, won with a team total of 180. Central Missouri was second with 130.5, and Pittsburg State was third with 108.
Spenner broke a nine-year old school record when she posted a leap of 39-05 3/4 in the triple jump, besting the previous mark set by Melissa Meisinger by three-and-a-half inches. Spenner finished seventh in the event.
Haugland set a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 159-03, eleven inches better than her previous pr. She earned fifth place in the event.
The Mavericks now will gear up for the 2011 NCAA outdoor championship on May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif.
