Mavs Earn MIAA Academic Honors; Finish 29th in Dir

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Nearly 190 University of Nebraska Omaha student-athletes picked up Academic Awards from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Mavericks were part of a group of more than 1,500 student-athletes honored throughout the league.
Sixty-three student athletes overall and five Mavericks earned the Academic Excellence Award for earning a grade-point average of 4.0 in at least two semesters. The Mavs on that list included Elizabeth Havekost (golf), Megan Hutson (volleyball), Melanie McCormick (soccer), Kelsie Olson (tennis) and Brooke Thilges (golf).
Twenty Mavericks were among the 184 winners of the MIAA's Scholar-Athlete Award. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and if competing in a championship sport of the MIAA, earn All-MIAA honors. If competing in a non-championship sport (swimming, women's bowling, men's soccer and wrestling), the student-athlete must either be selected to an all-region or district team in a team sport or qualify for the national meet in an individual sport.
The Mavericks landed 187 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA in at least two semesters at their school.
In other news, the Mavericks finished 29th in the final Learfield Sports Director's Cup standings for Division II schools nationwide. The Mavs earned 397 points. UNO is the second-highest ranked MIAA school after Central Missouri which finished second behind Grand Valley State (Mich.) which won for the eighth straight year. The Director's Cup standings include 234 Division II schools.
The Director's Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based an institution's finish in up to 14 sports (seven men's and seven women's).
