NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - The UNO men's golf team earned ninth place at the Fairway Club Invitational hosted by Nebraska on Tuesday. The Mavericks finished with a team score of 937 in the first tournament of its new era.
UNO is playing its first season of men's golf since the 1979-80 school year. Following that season, the program was discontinued before being revived in the spring of 2011 as a Division I program.
The host Huskers won the event with a score of 894, edging Missouri State which finished second at 902, a shot ahead of Creighton which took third.
Freshman Karl Kreiser led the Mavericks in scoring for the tournament with a three-round total of 231, putting him in a tie for 21st out of 70 golfers. He closed the tournament with a round of 80 on Tuesday.
Taylor Sidzyik, a transfer from Nebraska Kearney, and Mitch Johnson tied for second for UNO with scores of 236. Sidzyik posted a 79 in the final round while Johnson had an 81.
Michael Shukis, another transfer from UNK, had UNO's best round of the day with a 76. He finished fourth in scoring for the Mavs with 241, one stroke ahead of Alex Holtan who carded a 242 in three trips around the 7,158 yard layout at ArborLinks Golf Course.
Missouri State's Daily Young finished a wire-to-wire individual win, closing with a 72 for a three-under score of 213. He was two strokes better than Nebraska's Manuel Lavin.
The Mavericks are back in action at the Nebraska Kearney Invite on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 19-20.
