AXTELL, Neb. - Michael Shukis was two over par through the first two rounds to lead the UNO men's golf team on the first day of competition at the Nebraska Kearney Invitational.
Shukis, a transfer from UNK, shot a 74 in the first round and then an even-par round of 72 at the Awarii Dunes golf course. His second-round score is the best posted by the Mavericks in their return to men's golf this season. Shukis is tied for second overall out of 60 golfers.
The Mavericks are in fourth place in the 11-team tournament with a team score of 610. UNK leads after shooting a score of 587. Southeast Community College is second at 606, and Nebraska Wesleyan sits in third at 608.
Mitch Johnson is in ninth overall after posting scores of 74 and 77 for a 151. Taylor Sidzyik, another UNK transfer, is third for UNO and 22nd overall with a two-round score of 156. His best round was the first when he carded a 77.
Alex Holtan was fourth for UNO with a score of 158 including a 75 in round one. Karl Krieser shot a pair of 82s and is fifth for UNO at 164.
The final round begins Tuesday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
