Maverick Women Wrap Fall at Evansville

OMAHA, Neb. - One week after the Omaha men's golf team concluded its fall season, the Omaha women's golf team does the same, competing in the Braun Intercollegiate at Evansville on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29 and 30. The 36-hole tournament will be played at the Quail Crossing Golf Club in Boonville, Ind.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.

The Mavericks men finished the fall season at the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational last week. Karl Krieser tied a school Division I record by shooting a 54-hole score of 219 to tie the mark set by teammate Michael Shukis last year at the Nebraska Kearney Invitational. Alex Overfelt (225/T-25th), Mitch Ryan (235/T-44th), Taylor Sidzyik (235/T-44th) and Mitch Johnson (239/T-48th) also competed as the Mavericks finished in a tie for 6th. The women last played on Oct. 15 and 16 at the Payne Stewart Memorial at Missouri State. Sophie Peters shot the second-best 54-hole score in school history to lead the Mavs to 12th place. Peters finished at 225, just three strokes off the school record set by Sara Wolfe at the NCAA North Regional in 2008. She was in a three-way tie for fifth in the 93-player tournament. Brooke Thilges (246/T-53rd), Britany Seda (247/T-56th), Elizabeth Havekost (250/T-64th), Katie Kesti (253/68th) and Melyssa Doerr (259/T-77th) also competed for the Mavs.
Men's Marks
Thanks to a strong finish, Krieser finished in a tie with Overfelt for the team scoring lead as each player posted a scoring average of 77 through 14 rounds this fall. Krieser posted UNO's four best 18-hole rounds of the fall with a 71 in round one of the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational, 72s in the first round of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate and in the second round at Houston and one of six rounds of 73. Overfelt had three rounds of 73 during the fall while freshman Mitch Ryan also posted two 73s. Mitch Johnson had UNO's best 36-hole tournament score of 148, tying for second at the Concordia Invitational on Sept. 16-17. That tournament marked the Mavericks' best team finish of the fall - first place. The Mavs' best team round came in the first round of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate on Oct. 15 when they shot 295.
Women's Marks
Entering the final week of the fall season, Peters leads the Mavs with a scoring average of 81.5 in 13 rounds. Freshmen Britany Seda and Katie Kesti, who have played in eight rounds each, are second and third at 82.4 and 82.5. In addition to owning UNO's best 54-hole score of the fall, Peters also has carded the Mavericks' best 36-hole score of 154 at the Concordia Invitational on Sept. 16-17. Her round of 73 in the first round of the Payne Stewart Memorial is also UNO's best 18-hole score this season. Peters has carded the Mavericks' five best rounds of the fall with a 74 in round three at the Payne Stewart Memorial, 77s in rounds one and two at Concordia and two of three 78s recorded. Seda owns the other 78, shot in the first round at the Payne Stewart Memorial. The Mavericks finished third at Concordia, their best team finish of the fall season to date. Their best team round has been a 319 shot in the first round, also at Concordia.
