Mavs Take Fifth at Summit Championship

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Omaha cross country team overcame cold conditions to earn fifth place in its first time in the Summit League Championship on Saturday morning.
The Mavericks finished with 157 points, finishing in the middle of the pack. UNO had been picked last in the Summit League's pre-season poll. Pre-season favorite North Dakota State repeated as Summit League champion with a score of 36. South Dakota was second with 59 while South Dakota State took third with 63.
Amanda Vorthmann concluded a sterling season, finishing third overall with a time of 22:08.2 and just 19 seconds behind overall winner Brittni Hutton of Oakland. Vorthmann led the Mavericks in all six races this year. Following the meet, she was named to the All-Summit League first team.
Katarina Zarudnaya came in second for the Mavs and 32nd overall with a time of 23:45.4, followed closely by MiKayla Peck who was third for UNO and 38th overall in a time of 23:53.7.
Ashley Kildow was fourth and 41st overall, coming in at 23:58.9, and Nicole Behm completed the scoring just two places behind with a time of 24:08.8.
Kristin Rogers (53rd/24:31.3), Carolyn Newhouse (55th/25:12.1) and Kayla Fenske (64th/25:23.1) also competed for the Mavericks.
The meet marks the end of the cross country careers of seniors Vorthmann and Behm. Both will compete for the Mavericks in indoor and outdoor track during the winter and spring.
