MCCOOK LAKE S.D. – The Omaha cross country team put three runners in the top 10 to win the Briar Cliff Invite on Saturday. It was the Mavericks' first win of the year.
UNO earned 40 points to lead the field of 16 teams. Dordt took second with 68 points, and Doane was third with 108.
Senior Amanda Vorthmann was the overall winner for the second time this season, finishing the 5K race with a time of 17:12. It is believed to be the fastest 5K time in school history for either cross country or track and field. It is also the fastest time for that distance in the Summit League this season.
Vorthmann has led the Mavericks in all four meets this season.
Sophomore Ashley Kildow was second for the Mavs and sixth overall with a time of 18:14, and senior Nicole Behm was close behind finishing ninth overall with a time of 18:29.
Kristin Rogers finished just out of the top 10, coming in 11th overall and fourth for the Mavs with a time of 18:38. Katarina Zarudnaya was fifth and 13th overall with a time of 18:42, giving UNO a pack time of 90 seconds.
UNO sent 13 runners to the course in McCook Lake including sophomore MiKayla Peck and freshman Kourtney Osentoski. Peck finished the race in 16th place with a time of 18:46 while Osentoski came in 27th with a time of 19:10. In eighth place for the Mavs was junior Kayla Fenske at 19:13, 30th overall.
Carolyn Newhouse (37th/19:21), Avery Schmidt (56th/19:43), Lydia Martin (72nd/20:17), Michelle Gatewood (73rd/20:17) and Karo Garcia (78th/20:24) also competed for UNO.
All of the Mavericks posted 5K personal bests in the race.
Omaha travels back to South Dakota next week for the Tim Young Dakota Days Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m.
