Spenner Named Track Athlete of Week
Dec 11, 2012 | General, Track & Field
ELMHURST, Ill. - Sami Spenner of the Omaha Track & Field team was named the Summit League's female Track and Field athlete of the week. It's the first time the awards have been handed out this season.
The award comes on the heels of UNO's first meet of the season, the Cyclone Holiday Preview at Iowa State last weekend.
Spenner collected her first career Athlete of the Week honor after winning the long jump and triple jump with marks in the nation's top-six. The Columbus, Neb., native won the triple jump with a league-best distance of 41'1.75” (12.54m), which would rank first in the nation. However Omaha is not eligible for the NCAA Championships due to Division I reclassification. She claimed first in the long jump with a mark of 19'6” (5.94m), also tops in the league and a mark that would rank sixth in the nation.
In her final event, the junior ran a personal-best 8.95 with a top-five finish in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Mavericks return to action at the Holiday Inn Invitational at Nebraska on Jan. 11-12, 2013.
