CLEVELAND, Miss. – The UNO swimming & diving team opened the 2012 New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships on Wednesday, competing in two events on its first of the four-day meet.

The Mavericks' 200 medley relay team of junior Cami Hansberry, sophomore Kylie Rathbone, senior Colleen Klaiber and sophomore Whitney Korgan won its event, coming in at 1:45.88.

Freshman Lexi Bergeron swam in the 1,000 free, placing second with a time of 1:58.83.

“Our team has done a fantastic job on the first night,” Head Coach Todd Samland said. “We competed extremely well, and I was very pleased with our times. Lexi (Bergeron) fought for second in the 1,000 free, and I was very impressed with the 200 medley relay winning in a very tight race.

“This season has been a complete learning experience for us, and the lessons we are learning in this final competition will help us next year. We have not had a championship final meet away from home for many years. To compete at a high level with great competition is difficult, but being away brings a new challenge.”

Nebraska Omaha returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 23 at the NSISC Championships. Preliminaries are set for 10 a.m., and finals will begin at 6 p.m. at the Delta State Aquatics Center.
