Mavs Capture 200 Free Relay Record at NSISC Meet

Day Two Results
CLEVELAND, Miss. – The UNO swimming & diving team continued its run at the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships on Thursday, posting top times in a pair of events on day two of the competition at the Delta State Aquatics Center. The Mavs' 200 freestyle relay team highlighted the event with its race, going 1:35.08 to break the previous school record of 1:35.24 set in 2005.
Junior Cami Hansberry and senior Colleen Klaiber had an outstanding day, each appearing in a trio of events that all placed in the top three, including the 200 free relay. Hansberry had the top time the 50 freestyle (23.83), leading a Maverick sweep of the top three. Junior Anna Haxby trailed Hansberry in second (24.13), and Klaiber added a third-place showing (24.18).
Hansberry, Klaiber and Haxby were also part of the school-record 200 freestyle relay team, along with sophomore Kylie Rathbone, clocking in at 1:35.08 to lead the field. Rathbone, Hansberry and Klaiber closed the day by teaming up again in the 400 medley relay – this time joined by sophomore Madeline Hutt – to come in third with a time of 3:52.24.
In the 500 free, freshman Lexi Bergeron took sixth in 5:07.85, while freshman Christen Young followed in seventh in 5:10.06. Rathbone also claimed sixth in the 200 individual medley, posting a mark of 2:08.85.
“I was extremely happy with our performance today,” Head Coach Todd Samland said. “As a program, we have two goals: improving within ourselves and to be very competitive. Tonight we had a relay with a school-record time and also placed 1-2-3 in the 50 free. We also had two swimmers in the top eight of the 500 free and four in the top 16 of the 200 IM.
“Over 90 percent of our athletes had lifetime-best swims today. With a fourth of the meet behind us, I am looking forward to what the competition will bring on Friday and Saturday.”
Although Nebraska Omaha competes a full slate of events this weekend, the team is not eligible to win the conference championship. The Mavericks, who are reclassifying to NCAA Division I, can swim in any event but may not earn any points from their performances.
UNO resumes action on day three of the NSISC Championships on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Delta State Aquatics Center. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., and finals are slated for 6 p.m.
