CLEVELAND, Miss. – The UNO swimming & diving team closed its 2012 season on Saturday, capping a four-day run at the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships at the Delta State Aquatics Center.
Sophomore Madeline Hutt broke UNO's third school record of the weekend, posting a time of 2:20.17 in the 200 breaststroke. Hutt's mark bested the previous record of 2:21.57 set by former Maverick Ashley Renshaw in 2003.
The Mavericks' 400 freestyle relay team of senior Colleen Klaiber, junior Cami Hansberry and sophomores Whitney Korgan and Kylie Rathbone posted the top time in their event, swimming a 3:29.77. UNO had another group finish sixth (3:37.59), achieved by sophomore Erin Wright, senior Kylie Hubbell, junior Anna Haxby and freshman Christen Young.
Young also took second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.99, while sophomore Hannah Alexander followed Hutt in the 200 breast with a fifth-place mark of 2:25.77.
The 100 freestyle saw Rathbone place third (52.33) and Hansberry take sixth (52.90), and freshman Jenna Foiles notched a fourth-place showing with a mark of 2:08.29.
Although Nebraska Omaha competes a full slate of events this weekend, the team is not eligible to win the conference championship. The Mavericks, who are reclassifying to NCAA Division I, can swim in any event but may not earn any points from their performances.
“We were thankful for the opportunity to participate in the New South Championships this weekend,” Head Coach Todd Samland said. “It was a great meet for us to compete in this year. We finished with some very positive notes and strong performances, especially with Maddie Hutt getting a school record and our relay posting the top time."
