UNO, Methodist To Host Frog Fling

OMAHA, Neb. – You may have heard of teddy bear tosses at hockey games, but come Friday, March 2, UNO hockey fans will be flinging frogs onto the ice at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
Methodist Health System and UNO hockey are joining forces for the Leap-for-a-Cure “Frog Fling”, with all proceeds going to the education and treatment of brain cancer at the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center.
Brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children under age 20 and in males ages 20-39 and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in females ages 20–39.
“We are pleased to be joining Methodist Health System and Leap-for-a-Cure for this unique event,” said Matt Hansen, Director of Athletic Sponsorships and Marketing at UNO. “We love the idea of a 'frog fling', and it will add to the already charged atmosphere as we take on the Denver Pioneers that weekend.”
UNO and Denver will square off at 6:37 p.m. on March 2. The game will be televised nationwide on NBC Sports Network.
People will be able to purchase stuffed frogs for $5 the night of the game at the CenturyLink Center and at other Omaha locations.
At the second intermission, those who have purchased frogs will be asked to “fling” their frog onto the ice.
Methodist Health System and UNO hockey have been teaming up to raise funds for Leap-for-a-Cure since 2009.
“We hope we cover the ice with stuffed frogs,” Hansen said. “Not only will this be a fun event, but it is benefiting a great cause in Leap-for-a-Cure.”
Leap-for-a-Cure was founded by Sue Roberts of Omaha after her daughter, Heather, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Since the organizations inception in 2008, more than $300,000 has been raised to improve treatment, education, and awareness of brain cancer in the Omaha community.
In addition to the frog fling, hockey fans can also participate in a UNO jersey auction at the March 2 game.
