LONDON - Former UNO sprint standout Pinar Saka will be one of 49 athletes from Turkey competing for her country in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London beginning this Saturday.
Saka will compete in the 400 meters, an event she excelled at while running for UNO. She is currently ranked 56th in the world with a time of 51.60 and will be the first Turkish woman to ever compete in the event in the Olympics.
During her UNO career, Saka set the school indoor record in the 400 of 53.09 in 2009, the same year she set the school's outdoor mark of 53.69. Saka also owns UNO's top time in the 200 meters (23.93) and 600 yards (1:20.36) indoors. She also was a member of UNO's school record 4x400 meter relay indoors and its school record outdoor relay teams in the 4x100, 4x400 and sprint medley.
Saka is an eight-time All-American and a national champion indoors in the 400 meters and 4x400 relay in 2009. She won five conference titles in the North Central Conference and three in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. She was a part of an NCC indoor championship in 2007 and an MIAA indoor championship in 2009. She was named UNO's female athlete of the year for the 2008-09 season, the same year she was named the NCAA's indoor athlete of the year.
Track and field events begin Friday, Aug. 3 with the first heats of the women's 400 meters to be run at 6 a.m. CT.
