Spenner Named To D-I All-Academic Team

NEW ORLEANS, La. - UNO multi-eventer Sami Spenner was named to the 2012 Division I All-Academic Track & Field team today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She is one of 676 athletes to earn the honor nationwide.
Spenner, a native of Columbus, Neb., is a physical education major and helped the Mavericks' track and field team achieve a grade point average of 3.37 for the 2011-12 academic year.
To qualify, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and either rank in the top 96 individually or top 48 in relay events indoors or have participated in any round of the NCAA outdoor championship.
In competition, Spenner had another outstanding year. During the indoor season, she set eight personal bests including a score of 3,810 in the pentathlon at Northern Iowa in January. It is the third-best score in the event in UNO history.
She redshirted the outdoor season, competing unattached and continued to excel. She had a personal best score of 5,593 in the heptathlon at the Drake Relays in April, missing a chance to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials by just seven points. She also posted a personal best triple jump mark of 40-01 1/4 at Northwest Missouri State on April 7, a mark that would have been a school record had she been competing for the Mavericks.
Spenner is expected to be one of the Mavericks' top performers in the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons as UNO competes in the Summit League indoor (Vermillion, S.D. - Feb. 24-25) and outdoor (Fort Wayne, Ind. - May 9-11) championships.
