Mavs Finish Third at UNO/Creighton Classic

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha cross country team made its 2012 season debut on Saturday, finishing third at the UNO/Creighton Classic at the Chili Greens Complex. The Mavericks earned 61 points as a team to finish third in the standings and were led by senior Amanda Vorthmann, who placed first with a time of 19:23.
UNO's point total was good for third place, behind only Summit League competitor South Dakota (26 points) and Nebraska (52 points). The Mavericks finished ahead of Creighton (98 points) and Iowa Western (143 points). The head-to-head win over the Jays was the first for the Mavs against a fellow Division I school.
Thirteen runners competed for UNO on Saturday, paced by Vorthmann's winning time of 19:23. Sophomore Kristin Rogers followed by finishing ninth with a time of 20:02, and Ashley Kildow was right behind at 20:19. Sophomore MiKayla Peck was the fourth Maverick to cross the finish line, placing 19th overall at 20:58, and sophomore Katarina Zarudnaya came in 24th with a time of 21:18.
Freshmen Carolyn Newhouse (31) and Kourtney Osentoski (32) finished sixth and seventh for the Mavericks. UNO's eighth finisher, junior Kayla Fenske, was 34th overall with a time of 22:12. The ninth- through 13th-finishing Maverick runners were freshmen Avery Schmidt (38th – 22:45) and Karo Garcia (41st – 23:14), sophomore Michelle Gatewood (47th – 24:03), freshmen Jackie Mezick (51st – 26:38) and sophomore Kelsey Green (57).
UNO returns to action on Sept. 15 at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at 10 a.m. in Lincoln, Neb.
