Mavericks Finish Eighth at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – Senior Amanda Vorthmann ran one of the fastest 6K times in UNO history to lead the Omaha cross country team to an eighth-place finish at the Woody Greeno/ Nebraska Invitational on Saturday.
Vorthmann posted a time of 21:49.4 to finish fifth overall in the 289-runner race held at Pioneer Park in Lincoln. Only Anja Puc, running in the MIAA Championship in 2010, has posted a faster 6K time, completing that race in 21:39.
The Mavericks finished with 241 points for eighth place, up from a 13th-place finish last year in a field of 25 teams. This year, 32 teams took part in the event. Air Force won with 47 points followed by Summit League school South Dakota at 88 points and Kansas State at 118 points.
Thirteen runners competed Saturday for UNO. Sophomore Ashley Kildow ran her best race of the season and finished second for the Mavs and 41st overall with a time of 23:28. Sophomore MiKayla Peck was close behind finishing 48th overall with a time of 23:33. Sophomore Kristin Rogers finished 69th overall with a time of 23:54, and senior Nicole Behm finished 90th with a time of 24:12.
Sophomore Katarina Zarundnaya (101st, 24:26.2) and freshman Kourtney Osentoski (120th, 24:55.3) finished sixth and seventh for the Mavs. The eighth finisher for the Mavs, junior Kayla Fenske, finished 125th overall with a time of 24:59.
Kansas State runner Laura Galvan was the overall winner with a time of 21:10.9.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Boulder, Colo. at the Rocky Mountain Shootout.
