Steve Smith is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Omaha track & field program. He served as an assistant for one year prior to taking the head coach's position. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Mavericks to a stunning win in the MIAA Indoor Championships. He earned the award the next winter, guiding the Mavs to a repeat as MIAA Indoor Champs. Overall, Smith has guided the Mavericks to three conference championships and three top-five finishes at the NCAA Division II Championship including a fourth-place finish indoors in 2010.
Smith is assisted by Chris Richardson (jumps and multi-events), who was named the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. Marc Bierbaum is in his third season coaching the distance events in addition to coaching the cross country team.
Last Week's Action
At the Dordt College Indoor Invitational last weekend, Sami Spenner set a personal best in winning the long jump with a distance of 19-11 ½. It's her second straight PR in the event after jumping 19-06 at the Cyclone Holiday Preview on Dec. 8. She also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 39-10 ½ and had a PR in the shot put at 35-08 1/2. In both the long and triple jumps, Denneil Shaw finished third overall with career-best marks. She had a jump of 18-11 ¾ in the long jump and a mark of 37-09 ½ in the triple jump.
Ashley Kildow won the mile run with a time of 5:23.16 while Katarina Zarudnaya finished third with a time of 5:36.35. Amanda Vorthmann led the field in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:17.54. Kristin Rogers was fourth at 10:53.78, and MiKayla Peck also cracked the top eight, finishing sixth in a time of 11:07.14.
Other notable performances included: Lauren Psota finished second in the 600 meters with a time of 1:40.04, less than half a second behind winner Jen Petsche of Morningside; Lydia Martin was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.78.
NCAA Marks
Because the Mavericks do not qualify for NCAA championships during their four-year reclassification to Division I, their marks do not appear on the national performance list. However if included, Spenner would rank seventh in the country with her long jump mark of 19-11 1/2 at Dordt on Jan. 12. Her triple jump mark of 41-01 3/4 earned at Iowa State on Dec. 7 also would rank seventh. In addition, Vorthmann's school record 5,000 meter time of 17:39.73 run at Iowa State would rank 15th in NCAA Division I.
The Schedule
The Mavericks have seven meets on their schedule for the 2012-13 indoor season, all of them leading up to their first-ever Summit League Indoor Championship which will be hosted by South Dakota on Feb. 22 and 23 in Vermillion, S.D.
The Mavs also will take part in meets at Nebraska, Northern Iowa and Wichita State. They also will make a return trip to Iowa State two weeks before the Summit League Championship.
NCAA Championship
Omaha is now in the second year of its four-year reclassification to Division I during which it is unable to compete in the NCAA Championships. The Mavericks will be eligible for Summit League conference and NCAA championships beginning with the 2015-16 season.
Up Next For the Mavericks
Next weekend, the Mavericks's multi-eventers will travel to the Jack Jennett Invitational at Northern Iowa on Jan. 25-26 while the team also will compete in the South Dakota Alumni Meet on Jan. 26.
