Spenner Continues Summit Award Streak

ELMHURST, Ill. - For the third straight week and the fourth time this season, Omaha track & field multi-event specialist Sami Spenner was named the Summit League's Woman Athlete of the Week. She wasnamed co-winner of the award with Bethany Buell of South Dakota.
Spenner broke the school record in the pentathlon at the Jack Jennett Invitational at Northern Iowa last Friday. Her score of 4,104 eclipsed Anastasia Kyvelidou's previous record of 4,013 set back in 2005. Kyvelidou was the 2005 NCAA Division II Outdoor Athlete of the Year and that season, set the D-II record in the heptathlon.
In winning the event and setting the record, Spenner set personal bests in the high jump and 800 meters and tied her PR in the 60 meter hurdles that she set earlier this year. She won two of the individual events and took second in the other three.
Her score is the best in the Summit League this season. The Mavericks are not eligible for the NCAA performance list during their reclassification to Division I but if so, her score would rank fifth in the country.
Spenner also took first in the triple jump the following afternoon at the Bill Hillenbrand Alumni Track Meet at South Dakota.
The Mavericks return to the track on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2 at the Varsity Apartments Invitational at Wichita State.
