Omaha Closes Kansas Classic in Fifth With 238 points

Topeka, Kan. – The Omaha swimming and diving team ended the 2013 Kansas Classic Sunday in fifth place with 238 total points in the three-day competition.
Senior Madeline Hutt, a Summit League leader in the 200-Yard Breast, grabbed a second-place finish (2:19.12) in the respective race that garnered 17 points. Senior Hannah Alexander placed 12th (2:26.26) and freshman Morgan Steep took 14th (2:27.87). Collectively, they added 8 points to UNO.
Sophomore Natalie Renshaw took 10th place in the 200-Yard Back finals with a time of 2:06.14.
Stepp added the last individual win in the 200-Yard Fly, grabbing 2 points (2:11.90).
The final event of the Classic was the 400-Yard Free Relay. UNO's A team, made up of Renshaw, junior Jenna Foiles, senior Whitney Korgan and senior Erin Wright, landed in 10th place (3:35.43) for 18 points. The B team added 12 additional points (3:42.60).
“Today is exactly the reason that we attend this meet,” said head coach Todd Samland.
“I was very impressed with our swims this evening. This was a very good step towards great swims at Summit League championships!”
The team improved from their standing in last year's inaugural Kansas Classic. In 2012, the Mavericks earned 170 points and finished in sixth.
In final standings, Kansas won the Classic with 932.5 points. Nebraska improved to second place in the final day, taking 795.5 points. Iowa State took third (760.5) and Air Force ended in fourth (555.5). Omaha landed in fifth. Northern Iowa finished in sixth place with 172 points.
UNO will return home Friday and Saturday Dec. 6 and 7 for the Mutual of Omaha Invite. The two-day competition will be hosted on the UNO campus at HPER Swimming Pool. For more information visit OMavs.com.
