Spenner Gets Summit Record 5th Award
Feb 12, 2013 | General, Track & Field
ELMHURST, Ill. - Junior Sami Spenner has set her share of school records this season. She has now set a Summit League record as well. Spenner was named the league's co-winner of the Track & Field Woman Athlete of the Week for the fifth time on Tuesday, more than any athlete has earned the award in a single season.
Spenner reset her own school record in the long jump last week at Iowa State. She won the event with a leap of 20-05 1/4, beating her old mark by almost three inches. She also took first in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 41-10 1/2. Both marks lead the Summit League.
If the Mavericks were eligible for the NCAA performance list during their reclassification to Division I, Spenner's long jump mark would tie for ninth nationally while her triple jump mark would rank 17th.
Spenner was recently named the Summit League's Female Athlete of the Month for January, an award that covers all winter sports sponsored by the league.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday, Feb. 15 at the Nebraska Tune-Up in Lincoln. It is their final meet before they compete in their first-ever Summit League Indoor Championship on Feb. 24-25.
