This Week
The Omaha track & field team will compete in the Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 15 beginning at 12:30 p.m. It is the Mavericks' last meet before the Summit League Championship.
The Coaches
Steve Smith is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Omaha track & field program. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Mavericks to the MIAA Indoor Championships and repeated the feat the following year. Overall, Smith has guided the Mavericks to three conference championships and three top-five finishes at the NCAA Division II Championship including a fourth-place finish indoors in 2010.
Smith is assisted by Chris Richardson (jumps and multi-events), who was named the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. Marc Bierbaum is in his third season coaching the distance events in addition to coaching the cross country team.
Record Setting Stretch
Junior Sami Spenner and senior Amanda Vorthmann continue to re-edit the UNO record book. Vorthmann set two school records last week at Iowa State. She set the school's mile mark with a time of 4:56.57, breaking the old mark set by Tara Biltoft in 1997. The following day, she reset her own mark in the 3,000 meters, running a time of 9:47.90.
Spenner bested her own school record in the long jump at Iowa State, posting a jump of 20-05 1/4 to win the event. For her efforts last week, she was named the co-winner of the Summit League's Woman Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season. No Summit League athlete has ever won the award five times in a single season.
Last Week's Action
In addition to the record-setting performances of Spenner and Vorthmann, the Mavericks had their fare share of personal bests last week at Iowa State. Lianne McNaughton, competing for the first time this season because of injury, threw a personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 52-08, almost a foot and a half farther than her previous best. Liz Thompson posted a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 41-10 1/2, more than seven inches beyond her previous best. In the triple jump, Denneil Shaw had a leap of 38-04, good for third place and a new personal best. Kathie-Lee Laidley had her own personal best in the long jump with a distance of 19-02.
On the track, Lydia Martin had a new PR in the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.79. Katarina Zarudnaya posted UNO's top time in the race at 2:17.56. In the 5,000 meters, UNO picked up two personal bests. Kristen Carmichael ran a time of 19:01.86, almost 20 seconds faster than her previous PR. Kayla Fenske posted a time of 19:25.70, also a personal best. Kristin Rogers was UNO's top finisher in the event with a time of 18:16.89. Maja Mihalinec picked up a pair of third-place finishes. She ran a time of 7.61 in the 60 meter dash and ran 24.52 in the 200 meter dash.

High Marks
Because the Mavericks do not qualify for NCAA championships during their four-year reclassification to Division I, their marks do not appear on the national performance list. However if included, Spenner would rank fifth in the pentathlon with her school record score of 4,104. She'd also be tied for ninth in the long jump and 17th in the triple jump. She leads the league in all three events. The full Summit League performance list is available at OMavs.com.
Up Next For the Mavericks
The Mavericks will compete in their first-ever Summit League Indoor Championship on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 24-25. The meet is being hosted by South Dakota.
