VERMILLION, S.D. – Sami Spenner won the pentathlon and the long jump to lead the Omaha track & field team to second place after the first day of competition at the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championship.
The Mavericks earned 38 points, nine behind day one leader North Dakota State which earned 47. Kansas City is third with 32 points. The final day of competition begins Monday at 9:30 a.m. at South Dakota's DakotaDome.
Spenner won four of the five events in the pentathlon to win the event with 3,888 points, more than 300 points ahead of the runner up. She had a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 37-10 ½ and tied her PR in the high jump with a leap of 5-07 ¾ to win both events. She also won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.77 and the long jump with a distance of 18-10 ½. She was fourth in the pentathlon's final event, the 800 meters, with a time of 2:33.88.
Spenner's win in the pentathlon was good for 10 team points.
Spenner led the Mavs to 23 team points in the long jump with a winning leap of 19-09 ¾. Kathie-Lee Laidley was second with a jump of 19-06 ¼, a new personal best, and Denneil Shaw was fourth with a mark of 18-06.
Amanda Vorthmann, who is running all three distance events, finished eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:06.47, all while battling flu symptoms. She is scheduled to compete in the mile and 5,000 meters on Monday.
The Mavericks also earned four team points in the distance medley relay. The team of Nicole Behm, Jackie Mezick, Lydia Martin and Ashley Kildow finished fifth with a time of 12:27.43.
Also on Sunday, Maja Mihalinec qualified for the 60 meter dash finals with a time of 7.60 and made the finals in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.69.
The Mavericks qualified two runners for the 800 meter finals on Monday. Lauren Psota ran a time of 2:18.82 and Katarina Zarudnaya clocked a time of 2:20.31 to earn one of the eight spots in the finals.
Spenner and Laidley also both qualified for the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with times of 8.72 and 8.96 respectively.
