Spenner Named Summit Field Athlete of Year

ELMHURST, Ill. - Junior Sami Spenner of the Omaha track & field team was named the Summit League's female field athlete of the year, it was announced today. Winners were determined by a vote of the Summit League's head coaches.
Spenner collected the Indoor Field Athlete of the Year award after winning three events at the 2013 Summit League Championships and being named the Field Championship MVP. She took first place in the pentathlon (3,888 points) winning four-of-five events, the long jump (19'9.75”/6.04m) and the triple jump (40'9.5”/12.43m). She also finished fourth in the high jump (5'6”/1.68m) and 60-meter hurdles (8.69) at the championships.
Due to Omaha's NCAA Division I reclassification, Spenner was not eligible for the NCAA Championships or the national rankings. Instead, she competed at the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships and captured a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon with a school record 4,271 points. The six-time Athlete of the Week selection set a league record for awards in season and finished atop the league in the pentathlon (4,271 points), long jump (20'5.25”6.23m, school record) and triple jump (42'7.5”/12.99m) and ranked fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.66) and fifth in the high jump (5'7.75”/1.72m).
If eligible, the Columbus, Neb., native would have ended the season ranked second in the nation in the pentathlon, tied for 11th in the triple jump, and tied for 20th in the long jump.
Spenner and the Mavericks continue the outdoor season on Saturday, March 30 at the Wildcat Classic at Wayne State.
