This Week
The Omaha women's golf team stays in town for its next event of the spring, the 2013 Creighton Classic. The 36-hole tournament will take place on Monday and Tuesday, April 15-16 at the Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha. Play begins at 9:30 a.m. on Monday and 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 10th season at UNO, the second as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his second year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Teeing Off...Finally
In their first tournament of the spring, the Mavericks shot a three-round team total of 984 to finish sixth at the Kangaroo Invitational at Kansas City on April 9.
Senior Elizabeth Havekost and junior Brooke Thilges tied for the UNO team lead with matching scores of 243, good for a tie for 22nd overall.
Sophie Peters was third for the Mavs and tied for 26th overall with a score of 245. Katie Kesti finished at 259, fourth for UNO and in a tie for 46th overall. Melyssa Doerr completed the scoring for the Mavericks with a three-round score of 263.
Southern Swing
The UNO men finished with a team total of 937 at the Wallace Jones Invitational at Louisiana Monroe on Tuesday to finish 11th out of 14 teams.
Karl Krieser led the Mavs in scoring and finished in a tie for 12th at 227, 11 over par. Taylor Sidzyik posted a score of 234 to finish second for UNO and in a tie for 35th overall.
Alex Overfelt had a score of 238 for the tournament, a total that included a team-best seven birdies. He was third for UNO and in a tie for 49th overall. Mitch Ryan shot a score of 248, fourth for UNO and good for a tie for 68th.
Alex Holtan finished at 251, putting him in a tie for 72nd.
Maverick Marks
Through ten tournaments, including four this spring, sophomore Karl Krieser leads the Mavericks in scoring with a stroke average of 76.8 in 23 rounds. He's followed closely by Alex Overfelt who is second at 77.5 in 26 rounds. Mitch Johnson and Michael Shukis are 3-4 in scoring with stroke averages of 78.4 and 78.6 respectively.
Krieser owns four of the top six 18-hole rounds shot by the Mavericks this year. He is tied with Alex Holtan for the best round of the year at 71. Krieser got his in the first round of the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational on Oct. 22 while Holtan picked up his in the second round of the Beu Mussatto Invitational on March 29.
Sophomore Sophie Peters is the UNO women's scoring leader with a stroke average of 81.9 through 18 rounds this year. Senior Elizabeth Havekost is second at 82.3 while junior Brooke Thilges is third at 83.3.
Peters has carded the top five 18-hole rounds of the season for the Mavs including a season best 73 in the first round of the Payne Stewart Memorial at Missouri State on Oct. 15.
Next Up for the Mavs
Both the Omaha men and women return to action on Monday-Wednesday, April 22-24 for the Summit League Championship in Keller, Texas. It will be their first appearance in the event and their final tournament of the season.
