Apr 17, 2013 | General, Track & Field
Weekly Release
This Week
It's a busy week for the Omaha track & field team as it takes part in four different events. Some athletes will travel to California for the Mt. SAC Relays-Multis on April 17-18, the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific on April 19 and the Beach Invitational on April 20. Other athletes will stay closer to home for the Doane College Relays on April 19-20 in Crete, Neb.
The Coaches
Steve Smith is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Omaha track & field program. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Mavericks to the MIAA Indoor Championships and repeated the feat the following year. Overall, Smith has guided the Mavericks to three conference championships and three top-five finishes at the NCAA Division II Championship including a fourth-place finish indoors in 2010.
Smith is assisted by Chris Richardson (jumps and multi-events), who was named the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. Marc Bierbaum is in his third season coaching the distance events in addition to coaching the cross country team.
Windy Woodman
The Mavericks set several personal bests in spite of adverse wind conditions at the KT Woodman Classic at Wichita State last weekend. Nearly all times and distances in the sprints and jumps did not register as personal bests because they were wind-aided.
Lauren Psota led three Mavericks to a top-eight finish in the 800 meters, running a personal best of 2:15.22, eclipsing her previous PR by almost five seconds, to finish second. She edged teammate Katarina Zarudnaya who finished third at 2:15.55. Amanda Vorthmann was fifth with a personal best time of 2:18.80.
In the throwing events which are not subject to wind rules, Lianne McNaughton posted the fourth best distance in the hammer throw in school history, throwing 157-05 which was good for fourth place. In the process, she shattered her previous personal best by almost 25 feet. Liz Thompson also hit a new PR in the hammer with a distance of 136-06.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Madeline Glesinger was seventh in a time of 1:05.82, shy of her personal best by just .2 seconds.
Zarudnaya took third place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:39.66. Ashley Kildow set a new personal best, running a time of 4:51.22, finishing 13th while Lydia Martin had a PR of 4:55.95, her first time breaking the five-minute mark.
Vorthmann was third in the 3,000 steeplechase in a season-best time of 11:04.68, and Nicole Behm was fourth, setting a new personal best with a time of 11:10.88.
High Marks
Because the Mavericks do not qualify for NCAA championships during their four-year reclassification to Division I, their marks do not appear on the national performance list. However if included, Sami Spenner would rank 29th in the long jump.
In the Summit League, several Mavericks rank in the top eight in the league. Spenner's long jump mark leads the league while her triple jump distance ranks second. Vorthmann leads the Summit in the 10,000 meters while Kristin Rogers is seventh and MiKayla Peck eighth. Zarudnaya is third in the Summit in the 800 meters and ranks fourth in the 1,500. Lauren Psota is fourth in the 800 meters. Spenner and Laidley rank 4-5 in the 100 meter hurdles while Vorthmann is fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Behm is fifth. UNO has the league's best 4 x 100 meter relay time and its fifth-best 4 x 400 meter relay time. Laidley is third in the long jump while Shaw is sixth. Shaw is also fifth in the triple jump. Amanda Alexander is fourth in the heptathlon. Links to the full NCAA and Summit League outdoor performance lists are available at OMavs.com.
Up Next For the Mavericks
The Mavericks will take part in the presigious Drake Relays on April 24-27 while also competing at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College on April 25-26.
