Spenner Earns Summit Track & Field Nod

ELMHURST, Ill. - Junior Sami Spenner of the Omaha track & field team was named the Summit League's Female Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Spenner set two school records last weekend in two meets in California. On Thursday, she shattered the school's heptathlon record by scoring 5,806 points, the second best score in D-I this year, to win the event at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. She won the event by winning the 800 meters, the final event of the hep, in a personal best time of 2:14.90, the fifth-best time in the 800 meters in the Summit League this season. She also set a personal best in the shot put (37-11 ½).
On Saturday, she reset her own school record in the triple jump, posting a leap of 40-02 ¾ against a very deep field at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif. Spenner has set school records in the heptathlon, long jump and triple jump outdoors this year to go along with the school's pentathlon and long jump marks indoors this season.
In addition to the 800 meters, Spenner ranks in the top eight in the Summit League in the 200 meters (23.97/2nd), 100 meter hurdles (14.10/4th), high jump (5-06/4th), long jump (20-09 ¾/1st), triple jump (41-00 ¼/2nd) and heptathlon (5,806/1st).
Including the indoor season, Spenner has been named the Summit League's female athlete of the week for track & field seven times. This is her first award for the outdoor season.
Spenner and the Mavs are back in action in two meets this week. They'll take part in the prestigious Drake Relays on April 24-27 and also compete in the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College on April 25-26.
