Mavericks Head To Dakota Duals This Week

The Omaha track & field team ventures north to take part in the Dakota Duals being hosted by South Dakota State at Yankton, S.D. on Saturday, April 6. Competition begins at 11 a.m.
The Coaches
Steve Smith is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Omaha track & field program. Smith was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Mavericks to the MIAA Indoor Championships and repeated the feat the following year. Overall, Smith has guided the Mavericks to three conference championships and three top-five finishes at the NCAA Division II Championship including a fourth-place finish indoors in 2010.
Smith is assisted by Chris Richardson (jumps and multi-events), who was named the USTFCCCA South Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. Marc Bierbaum is in his third season coaching the distance events in addition to coaching the cross country team.
Record Setting Weekend
The Mavericks set three school records last weekend at the Wildcat Classic at Wayne State.
Amanda Vorthmann set the school record in the 10,000 meters, running a time of 36:15.97 to win the event and break the record of 36:34.01 set by Cheryl Fonley in 1984.
Sami Spenner broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 20-02 1/4, good for first place. She broke the mark that had been co-held by Anastasia Kyvelidou (2005) and current teammate Kathie-Lee Laidley, who equaled Kyvelidou's mark of 19-11 in 2011. Laidley was second on Saturday with a mark of 19-04 1/4 while Denneil Shaw was third at 18-03 1/4.
Spenner also took first in the triple jump. Her top distance of 40-07 was wind-aided so it does not count as a school record, but her mark of 40-02 in one of the earlier jumps was wind legal and does count as a school record. It breaks her own mark of 39-05 ¾ set in 2011.
The Mavericks earned several other first-place finishes on the track. Katarina Zarudnaya won the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:51.50. Lauren Psota won the 800 meters in a time of 2:22.55, a new PR. Nicole Behm won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:32.97 and took third in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:10.03. Madeline Glesinger won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:08.86. Spenner won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.58, edging Laidley at 14.62.
In the triple jump, Shaw was second at 37-06 3/4, and Jessica Ripp was fourth at 35-07 1/4.
High Marks
Because the Mavericks do not qualify for NCAA championships during their four-year reclassification to Division I, their marks do not appear on the national performance list. However if included, Spenner would rank 18th in the long jump and 38th in the triple jump.
In the Summit League, several Mavericks rank in the top eight in the league. Spenner's long jump mark leads the league while her triple jump distance ranks second. Vorthmann leads the Summit in the 10,000 meters. Zarudnaya is second in the Summit in the 800 meters with her time of 2:14.91 at the Tulsa Duels on March 16 and ranks eighth in the 1,500 with her time from the Wildcat Classic. Terri Armstrong ranks third in the 100 meters while Psota's 400 meter time of 58.95 at the Tulsa Duels ranks eighth. Psota is also eighth in the 800 meters. Spenner and Laidley rank 5-6 in the 100 meter hurdles while Behm is eighth in the 400 meter hurdles and fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. UNO has the league's best 4 x 100 meter relay time and its fourth-best 4 x 400 meter relay time. Laidley and Shaw are 3-4 in the long jump while Shaw is also seventh in the triple jump.
