MUNCIE, Ind. - Kathie-Lee Laidley set a new UNO and Summit League high jump record, and Sami Spenner posted a dominant win in the heptathlon on the second day of competition at the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Friday.
The Mavericks moved up to third place among the nine women's teams with a score of 57. Pre-season favorite North Dakota State leads with 89.5 points while South Dakota is second, just one point behind.
Laidley posted a jump of 5-11 1/2, breaking the old school record of 5-09 1/4 set by Sandy Derby in 1998. Laidley tied with Megan Glisar of South Dakota for the championship, but Glisar won the tie-breaker because of fewer misses and took first place. The old Summit League record of 5-08 1/2 owned by Mary Wirth of South Dakota State was set just last year.
Spenner, who is entered in five other events and will run in both relays on Saturday, won the heptathlon with a score of 5,356, well ahead of runner up Tansha Clarke of South Dakota who had a score of 4,919. In day two of the heptathlon, Spenner took first in the long jump at 19-09 3/4, second in the javelin at 112-7 and coasted to victory with a time of 2:39.48 to set the Summit League record.
As expected, Spenner was busy on Friday. She also won the long jump with a school record distance of 20-09, shattering her previous record by almost seven inches. She also finished sixth in the high jump with a mark of 5-06 and qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100 meters with a time of 11.65 and in the 200 meters with a time of 24.35.
Laidley also was busy. She finished second in the long jump with a personal best distance of 20-04 1/2 and qualified for the 100 meter hurdle finals with a time of 14.43, another personal best.
Denneil Shaw also scored for the Mavericks in the long jump with a mark of 19-02 3/4, good for fourth place and a new personal best.
On the track, Amanda Vorthmann, less than 24 hours after finishing fifth in the 10,000 meters, took fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:03.86. Nicole Behm finished eighth in a time of 11:41.37.
UNO's Maja Mihalinec also qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200 meters, running times of 11.86 and 24.37 respectively.
