Spenner's Bravura Performance Leads Mavs To Third

MUNCIE, Ind. - Sami Spenner earned her third individual win of the Summit League Outdoor Championship and was named the Field Championship MVP as the Omaha track & field team took third place in its first full year in the league.
The Mavericks finished with a total of 143 points. Pre-season favorite North Dakota State won for the sixth straight year with a team total of 230.5 followed by South Dakota at 151.5.
Spenner earned an astounding 49 points for UNO in the championship and was also a member of the Mavericks' two relay teams that combined to pick up 10 points. She repeated the same feat from the Summit indoor championship in February when she also was named the Field Championship MVP.
Spenner's third individual win came in the triple jump where she won with a top mark of 41-04 1/2. It would have been a new school record, but it wasn't wind legal. Teammate Denneil Shaw was fourth with a jump of 38-00 3/4.
Spenner also finished second in both the 100 meters (11.75) and the 200 meters (24.32), both personal bests. Maja Mihalinec was fourth in the 100 meters at 12.00 and in the 200 meters at 24.64, the final event of her outstanding All-American career.
In other the running events, Katarina Zarudnaya earned UNO's other first-place finish of the day, winning the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:38.90, the first of three scorers for UNO. Amanda Vorthmann was fourth in a time of 4:41.51, and Ashley Kildow came in eighth with a time of 4:45.64.
Amanda Vorthmann concluded her UNO career with a fifth-place finish in the 5,000 meters, clocking a time of 17:29.54. Vorthmann put forth the Mavericks' other remarkable performance of the championship, also scoring in the 10,000 meters, the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 1,500 meters, a punishing quartet of the meet's longest races.
Lauren Psota was second in the 800 meters in a time of 2:15.55, just ahead of Zarudnaya who finished third at 2:16.33.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Kathie-Lee Laidley came in fourth with a time of 14.55, a new personal best.
In the relay events, the team of Terri Armstrong, Spenner, Laidley and Mihalinec finished fourth in the 4 x 100 meters with a time of 46.30. Armstrong, Psota, Zarudnaya and Spenner also took fourth in the 4 x 400 meters with a time of 3:50.09, a season best.
Following the meet, Laidley, Psota, Spenner and Zarudnaya all were named to the Summit League All-League Team for finishing in the top three in their events.
The Summit League Championship marks the end of the season for the Mavericks who are not eligible for the NCAA Championship during their reclassification to Division I. Spenner, however, will compete in the USA Track & Field outdoor championship next month in Des Moines, Iowa.
