High Achievement On, Off Field For Mavs

OMAHA, Neb. – The first full season of Summit League competition brought both expected challenges and unexpected success for the UNO Mavericks in 2012-13. The Mavericks reached the half-way point of their reclassification by earning their first-ever Division I conference championship in any sport and acquitted themselves well across their full offering of sports while playing some of the top teams in the country.
The UNO baseball team capped off a remarkable turnaround by earning the Summit League's regular season championship. The Mavericks, who began the season 0-6 and were 6-15 before conference play began, closed the season by taking three out of four games from South Dakota State to earn the regular season championship. The clincher came in the second game of the series when Ryan Keele hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the final inning to give the Mavs a 6-4 victory.
Baseball wasn't the only UNO team that excelled in the spring. Maverick softball finished second in the Summit during the regular season with a conference record of 14-3. The Mavs were 36-7 overall in a weather-shortened season. Dana Elsasser led on the mound with the Summit League's best ERA (1.25) while Allie Mathewson had the league's third-best batting average (.395).
UNO track and field finished off a strong season in the spring with a third-place finish at the Summit League outdoor championship. That came on the heels of a surprising runner-up finish during the indoor championship in February. Sami Spenner continued to carve her name in the UNO record books. She set school records in the pentathlon and the long jump indoors and in the heptathlon, triple jump and long jump outdoors. She also was named Field Championship MVP at both the indoor and outdoor championship, earning 89 points by herself in both meets combined.
Also in the spring, men's tennis earned its first Division I win with triumph over Oral Roberts on March 9 while the women picked up their first Summit League win, beating Western Illinois on March 15. The UNO women's golf team finished fourth in the Summit League Championship behind leading scorers Sophie Peters and Brooke Thilges. The men's team finished eighth, led by Karl Krieser who posted the lowest Division I round in school history (70) at the Summit Championship.
The 2012-13 season began well for UNO in the fall. Men's soccer, in its second year of existence, finished 3-3-1 in the Summit League, good for a tie for fourth, and finished second in the conference with 26 goals. Felipe da Silva, Vance Rookwood and Matt Grosey were all named to the All-Summit League Second Team, and da Silva, Chava Garcia and Giovanni Giattino all made the All-Newcomer Team.
Women's soccer went 3-5 in the Summit League to finish seventh and along the way, earned the 200th career win for long-time head coach Don Klosterman. Dani Archuleta was named to the All-Summit League First Team while Hannah Wampler was picked for the All-Freshman Team.
UNO cross country finished fifth in its first appearance in the Summit League Championship. Amanda Vorthmann led the way, as she did in every meet last season, finishing third overall and earning All-Summit League honors.
On the volleyball court, the Mavericks started 3-0, getting wins over established programs Norfolk State, Hartford and Navy to win the Kristen Dickman Invitational at Navy. The Mavs also beat Syracuse 3-0 at home and earned their first Summit League win over Western Illinois on Sept. 28.
During the winter season, the UNO hockey team concluded its three-year run in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a record of 14-12-2, good for seventh place in a very tightly-packed race. The Mavericks were 19-18-2 overall. Ryan Walters had one of the finest individual seasons in school history. He was named a Second Team West All-American while racking up 52 points, tying Scott Parse for second most in school history. He would finish in a tie for second nationally in scoring while also leading the WCHA in scoring and earning a spot on the All-WCHA First Team. The Mavericks will move into the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference next season.
UNO men's basketball finished 11-20 overall and 6-10 in its first full season in the Summit League, good for sixth place. The Mavericks had been picked to finish last in the pre-season coaches poll. Justin Simmons was named to the All-Summit League Second Team after ranking fourth in the conference in scoring. The Mavs also made their debut in the new Ralston Arena, drawing two crowds of more than 2,000.
Women's basketball went 17-11 overall and 7-9 in conference play, putting the Mavericks fifth. UNO went 14-11 against Division I competition after posting a 2-10 mark in its first year of D-I play the previous year. Senior Paige Frauendorfer was named a Capital One Academic All-American and a member of the All-Summit League First Team, finishing third in the league in scoring and second in rebounding. Fellow senior Jamie Nash finished her career as the school's career leader in assists (564) and steals (361) and was named an All-Summit League Honorable Mention.
The Omaha swimming & diving team finished third in its first appearance in the Summit League Championship, missing out on a runner up finish by just four and a half points. The Mavericks broke three school records during the championship, and nine team members were named to the All-Summit League team including: Cami Hansberry, Anna Haxby, Maddie Hutt, Whitney Korgan, Natalie Renshaw, Mattie Fosbender, Erin Wright, Jenna Foiles and Miranda Knipfer.
The Mavericks had their finest semester in the classroom in the fall, posting a combined grade point average of 3.34, the highest in school history, and followed with a 3.33 in the spring. In the fall, a remarkable 90 student-athletes made the Dean's List (3.5 or better) while 32 made the Chancellor's List (4.0). In the spring, 79 athletes made the Dean's List and 30 were on the Chancellor's List.
The volleyball team posted UNO's best team GPA during 2012-13 with a mark of 3.73 while the men's golf team had the best men's team GPA at 3.42.
The overall academic excellence can be traced in part back to the opening of the Hamilton Academic Excellence Room in the Sapp Fieldhouse in late fall of 2012. The room has given UNO student-athletes a state-of-the-art space on campus dedicated to their academic pursuits with an academic support staff to assist them.
