Spenner Leads Heptathlon at Summit Track

MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior Sami Spenner leads a field of seven athletes in the heptathlon after the first day of competition at the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Mavericks are in sixth place through the first four events with four points. South Dakota leads with 54.5 points, followed by pre-season favorite North Dakota State at 46.5 and South Dakota State at 29.
Amanda Vorthmann earned UNO's four points with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:34.16. It was just the second time she had run the race this season.
Spenner set two personal bests during the first four events of the heptathlon to post a score of 3,356. South Dakota's Tansha Clarke is second at 3,047, and North Dakota State's Emily Staples is third at 2,898. The final three events of the heptathlon - long jump, javelin throw and 800 meter run - are scheduled for tomorrow at Noon at University Track on the Ball State campus.
Spenner set a PR in the first event of the day, running a time of 14.23 in the 100 meter hurdles. She posted a leap of 5-07 in the high jump and a throw of 37-06 in the shot put before closing with a personal best time of 24.51 in the 200 meters. She was the top finisher in three of the events and was second in the shot put.
Sophomore Amanda Alexander is in seventh place with 2,404 points. She set personal bests in the 100 meter hurdles (16.89) and shot put (34-02) while tying her PR in the high jump (4-11 3/4).
On Friday, field events will begin at 2 p.m. CT, and running events will start at 3:30 p.m. CT.
