Spenner Smashes Hep Record; US Women Win

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Sami Spenner broke her own school record in the heptathlon for the second time this year, helping the USA Track & Field team to a win in the annual Thorpe Cup competition between the U.S. and Germany.
The meet features seven women from each country competing head-to-head in the heptathlon and seven men each in the decathlon.
Spenner finished with 5,898 points, beating her previous record of 5,806 to finish fourth overall in the field of 12 athletes. The American women had the top five finishers. The men's team lost to the Germans.
On Sunday, Spenner opened with a distance of 20-02 1/2 in the long jump and threw for 119-01 1/4 in the javelin. She closed with a time of 2:13.18 in the 800 meters.
In the first day of competition on Saturday, Spenner opened with a time of 14.31 in the 100 meter hurdles, just off her personal best. She tied her personal best in the high jump with a leap of 5-07 3/4. She followed up with a new personal best in the shot put, posting a distance of 39-02. She finished day one tying a personal best in the 200 meters with a time of 23.67.
Spenner will begin her senior season this winter as the holder of five school records - two indoors and three outdoors.
