Mavericks Travel To North Dakota Next

The Omaha men's and women's golf teams return to action in two separate tournaments in North Dakota on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16-17. The men will tee off in the Erv Kaiser Invitational hosted by fellow Summit League school North Dakota State. Tee times each day are 8 a.m. at the Oxbow Country Club in Oxbow, N.D. The women will be up the road in Grand Forks, competing in the North Dakota Fall Classic. Tee times are 8 a.m. both days at the King's Walk Golf Course.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 11th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his third year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Men Grab Sixth at SIUE
The Omaha men shot the lowest 54-hole score of the Division I era to finish in sixth place at the Derek Dolenc Invitational at SIUE on Sept. 9-10. The Mavericks posted a score of 892, six shots better than the previous mark set last year at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at Kansas City. The Mavs' team score in round three was 303 and followed rounds of 292, another D-I era record, and 297 on day one.
Belmont finished a wire-to-wire win with a total score of 866, outdistancing host SIUE at 873. Lipscomb finished third at 883.
Mitch Ryan and Alex Overfelt tied for first in team scoring at 225. For Overfelt, the total tied his career best. Both players finished in a tie for 26th overall in the 70-player field.
Karl Krieser had UNO's low round of the tournament at 71 in round three to finish with a 54-hole score of 226, tying him with teammate Taylor Sidzyik. Both players were tied for 29th overall.
Alex Holtan finished at 229, good for a tie for 39th. Freshman Lucas Gervais, playing as an individual, shot a career-best 76 in round three to close at 239, putting him 66th overall.
Women Take Ninth at Nebraska
The Omaha women's golf team took ninth place at the Chip-N-Club Invitational at Nebraska on Sept. 9-10.
The Mavericks carded a 54-hole team score of 967 after a 322 in round three. Host Nebraska posted the best three-round score in tournament history, 874, to win by 18 strokes over runner-up Central Arkansas. Wichita State was third at 901.
Katie Kesti was UNO's top finisher with a two-day total of 235, a new career 54-hole record, to put her in a tie for 27th overall. Sophie Peters was second for the Mavs and tied for 36 overall with a three-round total of 240.
Freshman Sarah Pravecek was third in team scoring at 247 to finish in a tie for 49th. Makenna Kroeker was fourth at 248 to tie for 54th.
Gentry Carveth had a three-round total of 273 to finish 75th overall.
Up Next
Following a week off, the Maverick men will turn their attention southward when they take part in the Jim Colbert Invitational hosted by Kansas State on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The UNO women get no time off, however. They're back in action at the SIUE Intercollegiate in Edwardsville, Ill. on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24.
