Mavericks Head to Lincoln This Week

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha cross country team will continue the 2013 season on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. The team will return to action in-state at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln. The Mavericks finished eighth overall at last year's event.
This Season
The Mavericks are competing in their 32nd season of women's cross country in 2013. It is also the third year of their reclassification to Division I. They are not eligible to participate in NCAA championship competition until completing their four-year reclassification, nor are they eligible to win the Summit League Championship. The Mavericks will be able to win the Summit and compete nationally in 2015.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his first season overseeing the Omaha cross country and track & field teams as the head coach following six years as an assistant coach. Assistant coach Marc Bierbaum, now in his fourth season, guides the cross country team in addition to UNO's distance runners in track & field. Last year, he led the Mavericks to a fifth-place finish in the Summit League Championship after the Mavericks were picked ninth in the pre-season coaches poll. Bierbaum was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and track at Dana College where he graduated in 2001. He is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Cliff Cisar.
Last Time Out
The Omaha cross country team earned its first win of the season in the J.K. Gold Classic hosted by Wichita State on Saturday, Sept. 7. The meet was a double-dual format, pitting the four Division I teams against one another in head-to-head scoring. The Mavericks beat Oral Roberts, 18-45, while losing to Wichita State, 15-49, and dropping the other dual to Kansas State, 18-50.
For the second week in a row, Kristin Rogers led the Mavs with a time of 14:57.26 over the four kilometer course. Her time ranks as the fifth-fastest at that distance in the Summit League this season. Ashley Kildow ran second for the Mavs in a time of 15:03.25 while Lindsey Bruns was third at 15:17.37. Katarina Zarudnaya, running her first race of the year for the Mavs, was fourth at 15:31.69, and MiKayla Peck completed the scoring, running fifth with a time of 15:43.93.
Thirteen of UNO's 16 runners competed in the meet including Kristen Carmichael (15:55.10), Catherine Davison (15:57.76), Kayla Fenske (16:00.26), Avery Schmidt (17:08.56), Jackie Mezick (17:23.43), Brittany Phillips (18:25.88), Emily Moore (18:28.57) and Claire Cunningham (20:08.89).
Top Times
Juniors Kristin Rogers and Ashley Kildow made the Summit League's top times in the 4k after the J.K. Gold Classic. Rogers currently ranks fifth with her time of 14:57.26. Kildow is eighth with 15:03.25.
Three Mavericks broke the top 10 in the 5k times. Rogers is sixth with a 19:48.98 while freshman Lindsey Bruns is one rank below in seventh with a time of 19:59.79. Kildow rounds out the top 10 with a time of 20:32.89.
Omaha dominates the rest of the 5k times with five more Mavericks making the list. Redshirt freshman Kristen Carmichael (20:47.85) is 11th and junior MiKayla Peck (21:02.36) holds the 12th place time. Kayla Fenske (21:22.61), Avery Schmidt (22:07.89) and Jackie Mezick (24:10.64) finish the list with 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively.

The Mavericks will travel to Boulder, Colo. to take part in the Rocky Mountain Shootout on Saturday, Sept. 28 hosted at Colorado.
