Maverick Women Visit Edwardsville Next Week

The Omaha women's golf will take part in its third tournament of the fall season when it visits SIUE for the SIUE DoubleTree Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24. Tee times each day are 8 a.m. at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Ill. The Omaha men's golf team has the week off.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 11th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his third year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Mav Men Get Third Helpings
Mitch Ryan tied his career best round in the final day of competition, leading the Omaha men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Erv Kaiser Invitational at North Dakota State on Sept. 17.
The Mavericks finish with a total score of 913. Manitoba won the event with a score of 894 followed by host North Dakota State at 900.
Ryan tied for fifth overall at 223, his second straight week either leading the Mavs or tying for the team lead. The 54-hole score also tied his career best. Alex Overfelt was second for the Mavs at 229. He tied for 13th overall.
Alex Holtan finished at 232, good for a tie for 18th and just one stroke ahead of Karl Krieser who tied for 21st.
Taylor Sidzyik was fifth for the Mavs at 235, tied for 26th.
Freshman Lucas Gervais, playing as an individual, actually shot UNO's best score for the tournament at 221, a mark than included a team-best score of two-under-par 70 in round three. His score did not count toward UNO's team total.
Women Grab Fourth a North Dakota
Sophie Peters and Sarah Pravecek each shot 79 in the final round to help the Omaha women's golf team to fourth place at the North Dakota Fall Classic on Sept. 17.
The Mavericks as a team shot 991 in the 54-hole tournament at the King's Walk Golf Course, just one shot behind third-place South Dakota. North Dakota State won the event with a score of 934 followed by host North Dakota at 971. Minot State rounded out the team scoring in fifth at 1,067.
Peters was the Mavericks' leading scorer for the tournament with a total of 243, good for seventh overall. Pravecek tied for ninth with a two-day total of 246. Katie Kesti finished at 249, third in scoring for the Mavs and in a tie for 14th overall.
Gentry Carveth shot 254 for the tournament to finish in a tie for 18th. Makenna Kroeker was fifth for UNO and 27th overall at 261.
Kat Slump, playing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, finished at 284.
Up Next
The Maverick men get back into action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate hosted by Kansas State. The women will venture to Missouri the same days to play in the Kangaroo Fall Invitational hosted by former Summit League rival Kansas City.
