The Omaha men's and women's golf teams play in their first tournaments of the season to begin a fall stretch of four events for the men and six for the women. The men will take part in the Derek Dolenc Invitational at Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 9-10. Tee times each day are 8 a.m. at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville. The women will stay in-state, competing at the Chip-N-Club Invitational hosted by Nebraska on Sept. 9-10. Tee times are 9 a.m. on Monday and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 11th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his third year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Exhbition Warm-Up
The Omaha men's and women's golf teams kicked off the new season in exhibition matches with South Dakota on Aug. 30. No team scores were kept following the 18-hole match at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D.
On the men's side, junior transfer Lucas Gervais shot the low round of the day with a score of 73. Junior Alex Holtan was one shot back while sophomore Mitch Ryan and senior Alex Overfelt each carded a 75.
Junior Taylor Sidzyik posted a 77 followed by fellow junior Karl Krieser at 80. Freshman Miles Russell finished with a score of 82.
For the UNO women, freshman Sarah Pravecek posted the low round of the day with a two-under par 70. Sophomore Katie Kesti fired a round of 77, one ahead of junior Sophie Peters.
Redshirt freshman Makenna Kroeker shot 85 followed by freshman Kat Slump who had 98. Redshirt freshman Gentry Carveth closed the scoring with a round of 106.
Top Returning Mavericks
The UNO men return three of their top five scorers from last year including the 1-2 combination of Karl Krieser and Alex Overfelt. In 26 rounds last year, Krieser led the Mavericks in scoring with a stroke average of 76.7. He posted a team-best four rounds under par and had five of UNO's seven best 18-hole rounds of the year including a school record card of 70 in the third round of the Summit League Championship. Overfelt was second at 77.7 while playing in a team high 29 rounds.
Also returning are Taylor Sidzyik, Mitch Ryan and Alex Holtan. Sidzyik was third in team scoring at 79.3. Ryan, a freshman, finished at 79.9 while Holtan closed the year with a scoring average of 80.7.
The Maverick women have two letterwinners returning from the 2012-13 squad. Junior Sophie Peters was UNO's second-leading scorer last year, finishing with a scoring average of 82.5. She led the team with three top-10 finishes including two top fives, and she shot eight of the Mavericks' top 10 18-hole rounds of the year. Her 73 in the first round of the Payne Stewart Memorial at Missouri State on Oct. 15, 2012 set the team standard. Peters was one of three Mavs to appear in all 23 rounds last season.
Sophomore Katie Kesti saw considerable playing time as a freshman in 2012-13 and finished fourth in team scoring with an average of 83.2.
Up Next
The Maverick men will head north next week to take part in the Erv Kaiser Invitational hosted by Summit League rival North Dakota State on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16-17. The UNO women also will be in the Flickertail State when they take part in the North Dakota Fall Classic on Sept. 16-17 in Grand Forks.
