Mavericks Travel To Bradley This Week

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha cross country team returns from another week off when it runs in the Bradley Classic on Friday, Oct. 17. The meet begins at 3 p.m. at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill.
This Season
The Mavericks are competing in their 33rd season of women's cross country in 2014. It is also the final year of their four-year reclassification to Division I. They will eligible to participate in NCAA championship competition beginning in 2015.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his second season overseeing the Omaha cross country and track & field teams as the head coach following six years as an assistant coach. Assistant coach Marc Bierbaum, now in his fifth season, guides the cross country team in addition to UNO's distance runners in track & field. Last year, Bierbaum led the Mavericks to a sixth-place finish in the Summit League Championship. Bierbaum was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and track at Dana College where he graduated in 2001. He is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Cliff Cisar.
Last Time Out
Senior Ashley Kildow paced the Omaha cross country team for the fourth straight race as the Mavericks took sixth at the SDSU Classic on Oct. 4.
The Mavs earned a team score of 143 in their fourth meet of the season. Minnesota won the event with a score of 19 points. South Dakota was second with 54 and host South Dakota State was third with 92.
Kildow ran a time of 18:30.43, her best 5K time of the season and good for 12th in the field of 76 runners. Kristin Rogers was second for the Mavs and 32nd overall with a time of 19:18.72.
Alyssa Averhoff ran a time of 19:55.39 to finish in 45th place, less than four seconds ahead of teammate Perla Gutierrez who was 47th with a time of 19:59.19.
Kristen Carmichael completed the scoring for the Mavs with a time of 20:04.74, good for 49th.
Where They Rank
Both Kildow and Rogers rank in the top 15 in the Summit League for 5K and 6K times through meets on Oct. 4. In the 5K, Kildow ranks sixth with her time of 18:30.43 at South Dakota State on Oct. 4.
In the 6K, Kildow ranks eighth with a time of 23:10.60 run at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Sept. 20. In the same meet, Rogers ran a time of 23:16.90 that ranks 10th in the Summit.
Fort Wayne's Brittany Beard has the league's top 5K time at 17:35.75, and North Dakota State's Erin Teschuk has its top 6 K time of 21:02.
The Newcomers
Three true freshman, all from outside Nebraska, joined the Mavericks this season. Alyssa Averhoff comes to Omaha from Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she was a three-year letter winner in cross country and track at Kennedy High School. She scored for the Mavericks in her first collegiate meet, coming in third on the team.
Katie Bostrom is a native of Fargo, N.D. where she was an all-state performer for three years at Fargo South High School. Kayla Sabotin was a four-year qualifier for the state cross country championship while running for Waukee High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, sophomore Alyssa Thavenet, who participated in track & field last season, was added to the team following the first meet of the year.

The Mavericks will return to action next week at the Yankton Invite in Yankton, S.D. It will be their last meet before the Summit League Championship on Nov. 1 in Fargo, N.D.
