Mavericks Tune Up For Summit at Mount Marty

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha cross country team runs in the Mount Marty Invite on Saturday, Oct. 25. The 5K meet begins at 10:30 a.m. at Yankton, S.D. It is the team's last meet before the Summit League Championship.
This Season
The Mavericks are competing in their 33rd season of women's cross country in 2014. It is also the final year of their four-year reclassification to Division I. They will eligible to participate in NCAA championship competition beginning in 2015.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his second season overseeing the Omaha cross country and track & field teams as the head coach following six years as an assistant coach. Assistant coach Marc Bierbaum, now in his fifth season, guides the cross country team in addition to UNO's distance runners in track & field. Last year, Bierbaum led the Mavericks to a sixth-place finish in the Summit League Championship. Bierbaum was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and track at Dana College where he graduated in 2001. He is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Cliff Cisar.
Last Time Out
The Omaha cross country team got season-best performances from all five scorers at the Bradley Classic on Oct. 17. The Mavericks came in 25th in the massive 30-team field with a score of 638.
For the fifth meet this year, Ashley Kildow led the Mavericks with a time of 22:14.4, nearly a minute better than her previous season-best 6K time. She finished 44th overall.
Kristin Rogers was second for UNO and 94th overall with a time of 22:54.3, good for 94th place. Catherine Davison was next for the Mavericks and 160th overall with a time of 23:33.2, more than two minutes faster than her previous best.
MiKayla Peck, scoring for the Mavericks for the first time this season, also improved her season best by more than two minutes. She clocked a time of 23:38.2 that put her fourth for the Mavs and 165th overall.
Kristen Carmichael completed the scoring for UNO with a time of 23:47.5, good for 175th place.
Where They Rank
Kildow ranks in the top 15 in the Summit League for 5K and 6K times through meets on Oct. 18. In the 5K, Kildow ranks 10th with her time of 18:30.43 at South Dakota State on Oct. 4.
In the 6K, she is in a tie for ninth with a time of 22:14.4 run at the Bradley Classic on Oct. 17.
North Dakota State's Erin Teschuk has the league's top 5K time at 17:19.22, and South Dakota's Amber Eichkorn has its top 6 K time of 20:45.9.
The Newcomers
Three true freshman, all from outside Nebraska, joined the Mavericks this season. Alyssa Averhoff comes to Omaha from Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she was a three-year letter winner in cross country and track at Kennedy High School. She scored for the Mavericks in her first collegiate meet, coming in third on the team.
Katie Bostrom is a native of Fargo, N.D. where she was an all-state performer for three years at Fargo South High School. Kayla Sabotin was a four-year qualifier for the state cross country championship while running for Waukee High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, sophomore Alyssa Thavenet, who participated in track & field last season, was added to the team following the first meet of the year.

The Mavericks finish the season at the Summit League Championship on Nov. 1 at the Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo, N.D. The women's meet begins at 11 a.m.
