Mavericks at South Dakota State This Weekend

OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha cross country team returns from another week off when it runs in the SDSU Classic hosted by South Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 4. The meet begins at 10:30 a.m. at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings, S.D.
This Season
The Mavericks are competing in their 33rd season of women's cross country in 2014. It is also the final year of their four-year reclassification to Division I. They will eligible to participate in NCAA championship competition beginning in 2015.
The Coaches
Chris Richardson is in his second season overseeing the Omaha cross country and track & field teams as the head coach following six years as an assistant coach. Assistant coach Marc Bierbaum, now in his fifth season, guides the cross country team in addition to UNO's distance runners in track & field. Last year, Bierbaum led the Mavericks to a sixth-place finish in the Summit League Championship. Bierbaum was a three-time national qualifier in cross country and track at Dana College where he graduated in 2001. He is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Cliff Cisar.
Last Time Out
Senior Ashley Kildow led the Omaha cross country team for the third straight meet as the Mavericks took seventh at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Sept. 20.
The Mavericks finished with 163 points in the scoring among the eight Division I teams. Wichita State won the meet with a score of 35 followed by Air Force (67) and Northern Colorado (80).
Kildow ran a time of 23:10.60 over the 6K course at Pioneers Park to finish 18th overall. Kristin Rogers was just three spots back, clocking a time of 23:16.90.
Perla Gutierrez scored for the Mavericks for the first time this season, coming in third on the team and 43rd overall in a time of 24:32.80. Kristen Carmichael was right behind in 44th place with a time of 24:32.90.
Karo Garcia completed the scoring for the Mavs with a time of 24:58.30, good for 52nd.
Where They Rank
Both Kildow and Rogers rank in the top 15 in the Summit League for both 5K and 6K times through meets on Sept. 27. In the 5K, Kildow ranks fifth with her time of 18:38.87 at Memphis on Aug. 30 while Rogers is 14th with her time of 19:37.50 at the same meet.
In the 6K, Kildow ranks seventh with a time of 23:10.60 run at the Woody Greeno Nebraska Invitational on Sept. 20. In the same meet, Rogers ran a time of 23:16.90 that ranks ninth in the Summit.
North Dakota State's Erin Teschuke has the league's top 5K time at 18:09.75 and its top 6 K time of 21:02.
The Newcomers
Three true freshman, all from outside Nebraska, joined the Mavericks this season. Alyssa Averhoff comes to Omaha from Cedar Rapids, Iowa where she was a three-year letter winner in cross country and track at Kennedy High School. She scored for the Mavericks in her first collegiate meet, coming in third on the team.
Katie Bostrom is a native of Fargo, N.D. where she was an all-state performer for three years at Fargo South High School. Kayla Sabotin was a four-year qualifier for the state cross country championship while running for Waukee High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. In addition, sophomore Alyssa Thavenet, who participated in track & field last season, was added to the team following the first meet of the year.

The Mavericks will take a week off before competing in the Bradley Classic on Friday, Oct. 17 in Peoria, Ill.
