The Omaha women's golf team is back on the course on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 13-14 at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial hosted by Missouri State. The 36-hole event will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day from the Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, Mo. The men's golf team will send selected players as individuals to the Nebraska Intercollegiate, a 36-hole tournament hosted by the Nebraska Golf Association, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11. Play begins at noon each day from the Norfolk Country Club.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 12th season coaching the women's golf team at UNO. Nelson has led the Mavericks to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. Seth Porter is in his fourth year at UNO and was elevated to the head coach of the men's team prior to this season. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Men Take The Trophy in South Dakota
Freshman Phillip Baumberger shot a team-low score of 226 to lead the Omaha men's golf team to first place at the South Dakota Coyote Classic on Sept. 30.
The Mavericks finished with a team score of 908 over 54 holes to edge runner up North Dakota State by two strokes.
It was UNO's second straight finish at No. 1 after tying for the top spot at the UNO Invitational on Sept. 16.
Baumberger finished in a tie for eighth overall. Senior Alex Holtan carded a final score of 230, good for 17th overall in the field of 45 golfers. Karl Krieser was third on the team and in a tie for 18th with a score of 231.
Brandon Sletmoen was fourth for the Mavs and tied for 20th overall with a 54-hole score of 232. Taylor Sidzyik finished at 233, good for 22nd.
Caleb Haight, playing as an individual, carded a 78 in round three to finish at 238, good for a tie for 33rd.
Women Grab Fifth at USD
The Omaha women's golf team took fifth at the South Dakota Coyote Classic on Sept. 30. The Mavericks posted a 54-hole team score of 982 over the 6,041-yard layout.
Sophie Peters and Megan Vetrovsky tied for first in team scoring and 10th overall with scores of 238.
Katie Kesti was third for the Mavs and 23rd overall at 248 while Makenna Kroeker shot a total score of 258, good for 36th overall.
Katelyn Strudthoff completed the scoring for the Mavericks with a three-round tally of 287, putting her 44th.
Rankings
Krieser ranks 12th in the Summit League for scoring average at 74.2 through nine rounds this season. He is the only Maverick ranked in the top 20. Denver's Petter Mikalsen leads the league with a stroke average of 69.8 in just five rounds.
As a team, the Maverick men rank sixth out of nine schools with a team 18-hole stroke average of 301.2.
On the women's side, Vetrovsky ranks 16th in the league with a stroke average of 77.9 in eight rounds. As a team, the Mavs rank eighth with an 18-hole average of 322.1.

The women's team stays closer to home, playing in the Creighton Classic on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21, at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha. It is also their final event of the fall season.
