Mavericks Finish Wire-To-Wire Win To Open Spring

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Omaha men's golf team got its spring season off to a good start by winning the Carlton Oaks Invitational hosted by Western Illinois on Tuesday.
The Mavericks shot a team score of 314 in round three for a total score of 934, edging out runner up DePaul by one stroke. The two teams had entered the final round tied for the lead. Former Summit League member Oakland was third at 947.
It was the first tournament win of the year for the Mavericks whose previous best was a runner up finish at their own UNO Maverick Collegiate Invitational in October.
Karl Krieser, who along with Mitch Ryan had UNO's top round of the day at 78, led the Mavericks in scoring during the 54-hole event with a score of 231, good for seventh overall in the field of 51 golfers. He tied for the tournament lead in shooting three-under-par on the tournament's par-5 holes.
Alex Overfelt was second for the Mavericks and tied for eighth after a round of 79 on Tuesday that produced a tournament score of 232. That put him one stroke ahead of teammate Alex Holtan who also fired a 79 in round three for a score of 233.
Taylor Sidzyik shot 85 in the third round and finished fourth for the Mavs and in a tie for 28th overall with a score of 246. Ryan completed the scoring, finishing in a tie for 37th with a three-round tally of 252.
The Mavericks are off until March 3-4 when they take part in the Sacramento State Invitational.
