Spenner Named Summit League Athlete of Week

ELMHURST, Ill. – Omaha senior Sami Spenner has been named the Summit League's Track and Field Athlete of the Week. The honor marks the third time this season and a Summit League record ninth time that any one individual has won the award.
Spenner finished runner up in the pentathlon at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. this past weekend while breaking the American collegiate record in the event. In addition to breaking the school record in the event, she also set school records in the 60 meter hurdles and long jump. Spenner's pentathlon score of 4,498 points broke her record of 4,406 points which she set earlier this season at the Jack Jennett Invitational.
Spenner won the long jump and broke the school record with a leap of 20-09 3/4 to break the old record of 20-09 ¼. She also broke the school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.57. Spenner's marks in the 800 meter run (2:12.87) and high jump (5-09 1/4) were also new personal bests for the senior.
Spenner's pentathlon score currently ranks first on the NCAA Indoor Performance list and seventh in the world according to iaaf.org. The score ranks sixth all-time collegiately and is the top all-time score as an American collegiate athlete.
Spenner and the Mavericks will finish their 2013-14 indoor season this weekend at the Summit League Indoor Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind. The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. from the IPFW Athletics Center Fieldhouse on both Friday and Saturday.
