Tournaments in Louisiana, Illinois Ahead For Mavs

This Week
The Omaha men's and women's golf teams go back to the course next week with tournaments Down South and in the Midwest. The men are in Monroe, La. for the Wallace Jones Tournament hosted by Louisiana Monroe on Monday and Tuesday, March 31-April 1. The women start one day earlier at the Saluki Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois on Sunday and Monday, March 30-31.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 11th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his third year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Last Time Out
The Omaha men finished in 10th place at the UALR/First Tee Classic hosted by Arkansas Little Rock earlier this week. The Mavericks shot a team score of 926 in the 54-hole event. Alex Overfelt was Omaha's top scorer, finishing the tournament with a score of 226 to put him in a tie for 11th in the 75-player field. Taylor Sidzyik was second for the Mavs and tied for 36th overall with a total score of 232. Karl Krieser finished in a tie for 42nd after carding 234. Mitch Ryan posted a total of 238, putting him fourth for the Mavs and in a tie for 59th overall. Alex Holtan had a 54-hole score of 243, putting him in a tie for 68th. Miles Russell, playing as an individual, finished at 258.
The women finished in 16th place at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational earlier this week. The Mavericks shot 1,004 in the three-day, 54-hole event. Sophie Peters had UNO's best score at 231, good for a tie for 32nd overall. Katie Kesti was second for the Mavs and tied for 57th overall at 238. Kat Slump was third for UNO with a score of 265 while Makenna Kroeker was fourth at 270.
Mavericks' Scoring Leaders
Karl Krieser is leading the Omaha men's team in scoring this season with a stroke average of 76.4 through 21 rounds. He's posted two top-10 finishes and one top-five. Krieser tied his career best when he shot a round of 70 in the second round of the UNO Maverick Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 7, one of two players to post the low round of the season. He owns three of the top five rounds this season.
Alex Overfelt is second in scoring for UNO with an average of 76.8 while Mitch Ryan is third at 77.7 with two top-10s and one top-five finish. Alex Holtan is in fourth (78.2) and Lucas Gervais is in fifth at 78.8 in 12 rounds, a total that includes UNO's other round of 70 this season at the Erv Kaiser Invitational on Sept. 17.
Katie Kesti leads the UNO women with a stroke average of 80.2 in 18 rounds this season. She's had two top-10 finishes and one top-five. She also owns the team's best round of the year with a career-best 70 at the Bellevue Shootout on Oct. 18. She and Sophie Peters each own four of the team's top eight rounds this season.
Peters is right behind Kesti in team scoring with a stroke average of 80.3. She leads the team with three top-10 finishes and has one in the top five. Her score of 75 in the third round of the Morehead State tournament is the second best by a Maverick this season. Makenna Kroeker is third in scoring at 86.7 with one top-10 finish while Gentry Carveth is fourth (88) and Kat Slump is fifth (92.6).

The men play their final tournament before the Summit League Championships when they travel to Arkansas State for the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8. In their last action before the championship, the women visit former Summit League member Kansas City for the Kangaroo Spring Invitational on the same days.
