Mavericks Compete in Day One At KT Woodman Classic

Wichita, Kan. - Katarina Zarudnaya finished second in the 1,500 meters on Friday night to lead the Omaha track and field team in day one at the KT Woodman Classic.

Zarudnaya ran a season best 4:35.84 to finish behind only an Oklahoma Baptist runner in the 81 person field. Ashley Kildow finished ninth in the race with a time of 4:45.91 while Catherine Davison set a new PR with a time of 5:00.57, finishing 22nd. Jackie Mezick also set a new personal record in the event with a time of 5:12.65.

The Maverick multi-event athletes started the day by finishing up at the Emporia State Combined Multis. Sami Spenner finished first in the long jump and javelin throw. Spenner jumped 20' 3 3/4" to best the 22 person field while also throwing a personal best 130' 1 /4" in the javelin throw. Spenner did not record a final heptathlon score as she did not compete in the 800 meters.

Macy Woitzel also threw a new personal best in the javelin throw with a throw of 107' 11 3/4" while Amanda Alexander finished fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 113' 3". Woitzel's (16' 1/2") and Alexander's (15' 10 1/2") long jump marks were wind aided and do not count towards personal bests or school records. In the 800 meters, both Woitzel (2:40.47) and Alexander (2:39.85) set new personal bests.

Spenner again competed in the javelin throw at the KT Woodman Classic, where she finished ninth with a throw of 124'.

Omaha will finish up the KT Woodman Classic tomorrow with the sprints and field event portion of the meet. Action will get under way at 10:30 a.m from Cessna Field in Wichita, Kan.
