Mavericks Close Season at Summit Championship

The Omaha men's and women's golf teams will finish their respective seasons at the Summit League Championship on Monday - Wednesday, April 21-23. The 54-hole event will be played at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club in Keller, Texas. Teams will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday with the men and women alternating from the first and 10th tees. On Wednesday, the women will begin play at 7:30 a.m. from the first tee with the men following at 9:40 a.m.
The Coaches
Tim Nelson is in his 11th season at UNO, the third as Director of Golf, leading both the men's and women's teams. Nelson has led the UNO women's golf team to four conference championships including three straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles before the Mavericks began their reclassification to Division I in 2011. The 1980 UNO grad also has guided the women's team to three NCAA regional titles and three appearances in the NCAA Championship. He is assisted by Seth Porter who is in his third year coaching the UNO men's team. The 2002 graduate of Nebraska was a four-year letter winner there and a former professional player on the Gateway and Canadian Tours.
Last Time Out
Karl Krieser tied his career best 54-hole score to lead the Omaha men's golf team to fourth place at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate hosted by Arkansas State on April 8. The Mavericks finished with a 54-hole team score of 882, their best outing of the Division I era.
Krieser shot 219 to finish in a tie for ninth overall, his team-best third top-10 finish this year. Alex Overfelt and teammate Alex Holtan tied for second in team scoring and 13th overall at 220. Taylor Sidzyik was fourth for the Mavericks and tied for 25th in the huge field of 110 golfers with a score of 225. Mitch Ryan completed the scoring for the Mavs at 229 for the tournament, good for a tie for 43rd. Lucas Gervais, playing as an individual, shot 247 for the event.
Katie Kesti shot a career-best score for a 54-hole tournament to tie for second overall as the Omaha women's golf team finished 15th at the Gary Crossley Kansas City Shootout on April 8. Kesti carded a three-round score of 229 that included a final round of 72. The closing score is the second-best of her career, giving her the top two rounds shot by a Maverick this season. It was her second top-five finish of the season to lead the team. Sophie Peters was second for the Mavericks and tied for 60th with a three-round score of 253. Makenna Kroeker was third for the Mavs and 75th overall at 260, and Kat Slump completed the scoring for UNO by finishing 83rd with a total of 284.
Mavericks' Scoring Leaders
Karl Krieser is leading the Omaha men's team in scoring this season with a stroke average of 76 through 27 rounds. He's posted three top-10 finishes to lead the team and one top-five. Krieser tied his career best when he shot a round of 70 in the second round of the UNO Maverick Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 7, one of two players to post the low round of the season. He owns three of the top five rounds this season.
Alex Overfelt is second in scoring for UNO with an average of 76.3 while Mitch Ryan is third at 77.5 with two top-10s and one top-five finish. Alex Holtan is in fourth (77.8), and Taylor Sidzyik is in fifth at 78.8. Lucas Gervais is sixth at 79.5 in 15 rounds, a total that includes UNO's other round of 70 this season at the Erv Kaiser Invitational on Sept. 17. Krieser, Overfelt, Ryan, Holtan and Sidzyik all have played in all 27 rounds this season.
Katie Kesti leads the UNO women with a stroke average of 79.7 in 23 rounds this season. She's had three top-10 finishes and two top-fives. She also owns the team's best round of the year with a career-best 70 at the Bellevue Shootout on Oct. 18. She owns six of UNO's top 11 rounds this year while Sophie Peters has five.
Peters is right behind Kesti in team scoring with a stroke average of 81. She also has three top-10 finishes and has one in the top five. Makenna Kroeker is third in scoring at 87.1 with one top-10 finish while Gentry Carveth is fourth (88, 15 rounds), and Kat Slump is fifth (92.5, 20 rounds).
