Spenner Named Summit League Athlete of the Week

ELMHURST, Ill. - Sami Spenner was named Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Spenner earned the award for the third time in her career after breaking three school records on her way to a third-place finish in the heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays, finishing behind two professional track and field athletes.
The senior from Columbus, Neb. broke the school record in the 100 meter hurdles (14.00) and 200 meters (23.54) on day one of the event before finishing the heptathlon with 6,003 points and taking third while breaking the old school record of 5,898 points. Spenner also competed in the high jump (5-07 3/4), shot put (39-04), long jump (20-04 1/4), javelin throw (121-09) and 800 meters (2:11.93), setting new personal bests in the high jump and shot put.
Spenner is only the second collegiate athlete this year to reach the 6,000 point mark, trailing only Kendall Williams of Georgia (6,018 points). Spenner leads the Summit League outdoor performance list in three events (triple jump, long jump, heptathlon) and is ranked in the top five in six more events (100 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters, 100 meter hurdles, high jump, javelin throw).
The Mavericks resume action on Wednesday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet will get under way at 11:30 a.m. from Drake Stadium.
