Spenner Leads Heptathlon at Summit Championship
May 16, 2014 | Track & Field
FARGO, N.D. – Sami Spenner had the top marks in three of the first four events of the heptathlon and leads the event after the first day of competition at the Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Mavericks are tied with IUPUI for fourth place with eight points each with only four events scored so far. South Dakota State leads with 44 points followed by South Dakota with 33. North Dakota State is third with 21 points.
Spenner has 3,413 points, more than 400 ahead of Tansha Clarke of South Dakota (2,968). Rose Jackson of North Dakota State is third at 2,922. Spenner is the defending champion in the event.
Spenner had the top time in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 13.95, a time that would have been a school record except that it was wind aided. She also had the top marks in the high jump with a leap of 5-05 ¾ and in the 200 meters with a time of 24.27. She had the second-best mark in the shot put with a throw of 39-01, three inches behind Clarke.
UNO's Amanda Alexander is seventh in the heptathlon with a score of 2,488, a day that included personal bests in the high jump (5-02 ¼) and shot put (35-07 ¾).
Spenner and Alexander were both busy on day one. Alexander was seventh (122-06), and Spenner was eighth (119-07) in the javelin. Alexander's mark was another personal best.
On the track, Kristin Rogers and Lindsey Bruns both ran personal bests in the 10,000 meters. Rogers finished fifth with a time of 37:54.63 while Bruns came in eighth at 38:15:19.
Day two events begin with the completion of the heptathlon and decathlon at 11 a.m. on Friday.
