Spenner Repeats as MVP; Mavs Fourth at Summit

FARGO, N.D. – Sami Spenner concluded her Omaha track & field career with another MVP performance, helping the Mavericks to fourth place at the Summit League Outdoor Championship on Saturday.
Spenner was named the Field Championship MVP for the second straight year and the fourth straight championship, indoor and outdoor, accounting for 51 points on her own and also contributing to two relays that combined for 14 points.
The Mavericks put up 116 points in the championship held at North Dakota State's Schlanser Track. The hosts, the defending champions, took first with a score of 246. South Dakota State was second at 193, and South Dakota was third with 169 points.
Spenner successfully defended her third title from the previous season, winning the triple jump with a school record mark of 41-11 ¼, more than 16 inches farther than the runner up. It marked the second time she broke her own school record this season.
Spenner also won the heptathlon and long jump on Friday, events she won last year.
Spenner also took second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.81. Teammate Nicole Liske was seventh with a new personal best of 12.69.
Spenner's third individual event of the final day was the 200 meters where she finished third in a time of 23.84.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Kathie-Lee Laidley finished third with a season-best time of 14.60 while Celeste Robinson finished seventh at 15.19.
In other track events, Ashley Kildow set a new personal best in the 1,500 meters where she clocked a time of 4:39.83, good for fifth place. Freshman Catherine Davison also set a personal best in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:11.16, putting her in eighth.
Terri Armstrong was seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 58.76.
Katarina Zarudnaya, who qualified for the 800 meters and was scheduled to run in the 1,500 meters, did not compete due to injury.
In the relays, the Mavericks set two season bests. The 4 x 400 meter team of Alyssa Thavenet, Armstrong, Lauren Psota and Spenner was second with a time of 3:50.29. In the 4 x 100, Liske, Armstrong, Laidley and Spenner came in third with a time of 46.74.
Spenner concludes her sterling career at UNO as the owner of eight school records including five outdoor marks.
